Bluebird opened its doors in 2009 in the midst of Seattle's specialty sweets boom. The local sweet tooth has been fairly reliable over time, allowing Bluebird to expand to locations in Capitol Hill, Fremont, and Phinney Ridge/Greenwood. They specialize in homemade ice cream using local, organic, and hormone-free ingredients.
The Capitol Hill store is located on the corner of 12th & Pike St., marked with a hanging bluebird sign over the sidewalk and a glowing bluebird sign in the window. At the moment, you can also view the results of their ongoing Mr. T coloring contest. Yes, really. My inner 8-year-old was delighted.
The interior is cozy without being claustrophobic. The decor has been re-purposed from local materials, including gymnasium flooring. I especially liked the milk bottle lighting.
On previous occasions, I visited Bluebird solely for their ice cream and this week I set out to try their tea. They have a selection of over 20 organic and fair trade loose leaf teas. I went with Gunpowder green tea which was served in a large cup with the tea leaves tucked into a roomy steeping bag. The warmth of the cup and the heady aroma of the unfurling leaves were a nice complement to the smooth and chilly Snickerdoodle ice cream I had devoured.
