Tea Review: Borengajuli Assam (Metropolitan Tea Company)

Borengajuli Assam
Metropolitan Tea Company
Type:  Black (FBOP)
Origin:  India, Assam/Mangaldai
Product Description:  Malty with a jammy-like flavor best describes this premium tea. The tea is vacuum-packed at the estate capturing the pungent 2nd flush flavor at its peak. We’re proud to offer this fabulous, deeply malted, Assam. We trust that when you open the bag you’ll find the tea extremely rich on the nose and flavorful in the cup.

Temperature: 208° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 3 minutes

The dry leaves have a light aroma of wood, plums/prunes, and a trace of cinnamon.

The dark coppery red infusion has a light aroma of baked squash and warm fruit jam.  The taste is jammy with moderate astringency and a long finish.

I found the first infusion a little too astringent without milk, but further steepings were enjoyable with little astringency.  There was an interesting change from the jammy aroma of the first infusion to a distinctive black pepper aroma in the second and third infusions.  The liquor remained a deep coppery red throughout multiple steepings.

This was tea was provided as part of a workshop.
