Tea Review: Java Grey Dragon (Nothing But Tea)

Java Grey Dragon
Nothing But Tea/Phoenix Tea
Type: Black
Origin: Indonesia
Product Description: This extremely rare tea has to be one of the most expensive we have ever sold, however it also has to be one the best teas I have ever tasted. We don't get a lot of teas from Indonesia nor do we get many which are this good.

Temperature: 175-208° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 3 minutes

The dry leaves have an aroma of pepper, seasoned wood, and sweet oats.

The copper orange infusion has an aroma of baked fruit similar to persimmon and peach, and caramelized sugar.  The taste is mildly astringent, robust, with a hint of fruit and a long, fruity, dry finish.

This was marketed as a black tea and the results were good when steeped at 208° F for 3 minutes.  However, I found the results even more enjoyable when prepared as a white tea.  Steeping at 175° F for 3 minutes.  The taste became sweeter with fruity notes similar to persimmon, a hint of honey, and mild astringency.  This is a reasonably forgiving tea, so there is room for experimentation with temperature and steeping time to suit your tastes.  The first infusion provided the best results with full flavor and aroma, though a second infusion is well worth exploring if you're preparing this as a white tea.

This tea was purchased by me.
