AK's Tea Room

AK's Tea Room has moved to 235 NW 3rd St. , Prineville, OR.

While visiting family in Central Oregon this past week, I made time to visit AK's Tea Room in Redmond.  Tea rooms and tea shops in the area are rare enough that I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

AK's Tea Room is located on 6th Street near SW Evergreen Avenue in the Historic Redmond Hotel.  The hotel was built in 1928 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980.  The area surrounding the hotel is filled with fun and interesting shops that I plan to explore more thoroughly on a future visit... with a break for tea, of course.

The interior of AK's Tea Room is cozy and inviting with exposed brickwork on the southern wall and a variety of teapots and china on display.  Though they were busy with the lunch crowd, I was seated right away.  Service was warm, friendly and just a bit casual, creating a pleasant home-like experience.

AK's has a selection of 20 teas on their menu and they appear to have a few additional teas that aren't listed, so it may be worth inquiring.  I went with the ever-faithful Earl Grey and was not disappointed.

Taking Afternoon Tea on a first visit is tradition, so I ordered the Hampton Court Afternoon Tea for Two... for one.  If you arrive with more than yourself for company, you'll receive a full 3-tiers of tasty food.  Should you prefer simpler fare, try the Dover Cream Tea served with scones, lemon curd (or preserves), and clotted cream.  AK's scones are divine and if they weren't 300 miles away, I would stop in for scones and tea every day.

AK's is expanding into the hotel lobby where patrons will be able to enjoy their tea by the fireside which should be the perfect prescription for the impending autumn and winter chill.
