Tea Review: Suzume Kukicha (Obubu)

Suzume Kukicha
Obubu/京都おぶぶ茶苑
Type: Green
Origin: Japan, Wazuka
Product Description: Smooth with a rounded finish, Suzume has a warm sweetness with hints of mocha. Pale pink in color, this roasted Kukicha offers an aroma of wood, smoke, and apricot. Made from the branches of the Autumn harvest Tencha leaves used to produce our kitchen grade Matcha, Suzume is the most rustic of our Kukichas offered.

Temperature: 175° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 2 minutes

The dry leaves have an aroma of roasted nuts, wood smoke, and cocoa.

The infusion is pale yellow peach in color with an aroma of seasoned firewood, buttery nuts, and a hint of cocoa powder.  The taste is almost creamy with notes of smoky wood, roasted nuts, and apricots, with a lightly sweet finish.

This hoji-kukicha produced several infusions with no loss in flavor or aroma.  A 2-minute steep brings out good flavor and a 3-minute steep makes that flavor richer and bolder.  The roasted flavor of the tea lingers for quite a while and that is definitely a benefit.
