Tea Review: Organic Karigane (Sei Mee Tea)

Organic Karigane
Sei Mee Tea
Type: Green
Origin: Japan, Kagoshima Prefecture
Product Description: Karigane (kah-ree-gah-né) green tea is naturally sweet and buttery with a bright green dew. It is known as a “Hidden treasure of the Japanese tea.” Karigane tea is made with stems from Gyokuro tea, a shade-grown tea (the same as Matcha), full of tender loving care, which increases the Umami or rich and satisfactory flavor of this tea plant. Due to the lower caffeine level in stems, Karigane offers blissful richness, natural sweetness, and calm alertness. Our Karigane tea is grown at renowned Sakamoto Tea Farm in Kagoshima, Japan. Try the finest of the fine loose leaf teas!

Temperature: 140° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 30 seconds to 2 minutes

The dry leaves have a savory and sweet aroma with buttery, nutty, and mineral green notes.

The aroma of the bright green infusion is rich, buttery, nutty, and green.  The taste is thick, rich, and savory, nutty and green with a refreshing sweet finish.

The flavor and aroma remained rich and delicious throughout three infusions and would easily hold up well for several more.  While mild astringency developed after steeping at 140° F for 2 minutes, a 1 minute initial steeping resulted in a sweeter cup of tea with almost no astringency that was ideal for my taste preferences.  Steeping for only 30 seconds or at a lower temperature (~120° F) will produce even sweeter results.

This is another great example of organic tea done well from Sakamoto Tea Farm.  Visit Sei Mee Tea's blog to learn more about the story and process behind Mr. Sakamoto's organic tea.
