Behind the Museum Cafe is located conveniently behind the Portland Art Museum on SW 10th Avenue near SW Jefferson Street.
The Cafe was recommended by a tea ceremony acquaintance, so I was looking forward to the opportunity. Fortunately, it's along the route I take to visit family in Oregon and is relatively easy to locate for someone like myself who isn't familiar with Portland. The warmly lit interior was a welcome site on the foggy grey day of my visit.
Behind the Museum Cafe offers a fine selection of tea, coffee, and other beverages, as well as food (including many gluten-free options!). They specialize in Japanese teas, which is unique in the Pacific Northwest.
After placing your order at the counter near the entrance, you can relax in the dining area where your food and drink will be brought to you. While you wait, you can view the many beautiful pieces of art and handcrafted goods, including teaware, kimono, and decor on display. Many of these items are available for sale.
I requested the Matcha Set which includes a bowl of skillfully prepared matcha and a seasonally-inspired tea sweet (wagashi). I was invited to approach and watch as the matcha was prepared, after which it was brought to my table. My (delicious!) sweet was in the shape of Okagami Mochi, a traditional element of the Japanese New Year.
