Tea Review: Genmaicha (Tsubaki Grand Shrine)

Genmaicha (Jinja Fukucha/Ofukucha)
Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America
Type: Green
Origin: Japan, Mie Prefecture, Yamamoto-cho
Product Description: Not provided.

Temperature: 175° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 2 minutes

The dry leaves and genmai have an aroma that is marine green with notes of roasted rice and a hint of smoke.

The infusion is golden green with an aroma of roasted rice and popcorn.  The taste is savory, nutty, and green with no astringency and a long green finish.

The full, toasty flavor of this tea holds up well through multiple steepings.

This genmaicha is produced near Tsubaki Grand Shrine in Mie and donated to Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America where it was available for purchase during Hatsumoude, the first shrine visit of the New Year. Ofukucha is generally a quality sencha or genmaicha, sometimes with additional auspicious ingredients, meant to bring good fortune and longevity in the New Year.
