Tea Review: Karigane Cha (O5 Tea)

Karigane Cha
O5 Tea
Type: Green
Origin: Japan, Kagoshima Prefecture, Kirishima
Product Description: Crafted with roast twigs from old "zairai" tea trees, this tea is particularly gentle, grounding and satisfying.

Temperature: 208° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 2 minutes

The dry leaves have an aroma of roasted nuts and cocoa.

The dark amber infusion has an aroma of sweet brown bread, cocoa, and roasted nuts (chestnuts) with a hint of smoke.  The taste is sweet with notes of honey, roasted nuts, and a hint of cocoa.

Karigane hojicha is always a rich and roasty delight and this version does not disappoint.  Though I used 3 grams of leaf for the purpose of this review, I would encourage using at least 5 grams or 2 teaspoons for the best experience.  The flavor carries well throughout 3 steepings, though it mellows more after the initial steeping if your leaf (or in this case, stem) portions are not generous.

This tea was purchased by me.
