Tea Review: PF1 Black Tea (Rwanda Mountain Tea)

PF1 Black Tea
Rwanda Mountain Tea/Gatare Tea Company
Type: Black (CTC)
Origin: Rwanda, Gatare
Product Description: Not provided.

Temperature: 208° F
Amount: 3 grams
Steeping Time: 2-3 minutes

The dry leaves have an aroma of oats, fruit, and brown bread.

The liquor is dark red with a fruity aroma with light notes of brown sugar.  The taste is bold and astringent with sweet fruity notes and a dry, sweet, almost brown sugar-like finish.

As expected with a CTC tea, this brews up quickly and boldly to hold up well with milk and sugar.  Steeping for 1-2 minutes works well for those who enjoy a bold brew without additives.  When steeped for 2-4 minutes, the flavor profile holds up nicely to a splash of milk and a sprinkle of sugar.  For my preferences, 2 minutes was the sweet spot for enjoying this tea with or without additives.  Steeping a second time for 3 minutes had surprisingly flavorful results with only mild astringency.  Even a third infusion at 5 minutes was enjoyable.

I received this sample at World Tea Expo from representatives of Rwanda Mountain Tea who were looking for distribution opportunities in North America.  I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this tea and, if this flavor profile is anything to go by, would be very interested if they ever branch into orthodox teas.

This tea was provided as a free sample without guarantee of a review.
